My Personal “From Skeptic to Convert” Moment

Two weeks into a tension headache that felt like someone trying to pop a cork behind my eyes, I was desperate. Tylenol wasn’t working. Yoga wasn’t working. TikTok neck gadgets were useless.

Enter acupuncture. I booked a session mostly to prove it wouldn’t help. Within minutes of lying there with needles in my head, neck, and hands, I felt… calm. My muscles let go. My headache faded. When I sat up, my neck moved freely for the first time in days.

Then came Reiki. I was ready to roll my eyes, but halfway through, tears slid down my face for no reason other than my body clearly needed to release something. I walked out lighter, clearer, and completely headache-free.

Step 1: Acupuncture

So I booked with this woman, who came highly recommended and had a calm-but-cool therapist energy. The office smelled like eucalyptus, and everyone had glass skin and Birkenstocks, so I was obviously in the right place.

I lay down, she asked a bunch of questions about my stress, cycle, digestion, emotions (yikes), and then she looked at my tongue?? Apparently, that tells her things. Unclear.

Then she started placing needles. I thought it would feel stabby, but it didn’t. It was more like, “Oh. That’s it?” Some spots felt like nothing. A couple felt like a tiny zing of electricity and then melted into this weird, relaxing sensation, like my muscles were exhaling.

Within ten minutes, I wasn’t even thinking about my headache. My whole body was in this heavy, floaty, half-nap state. Like the kind of nap you’d have after a massage and two melatonin gummies. I even drooled a little. No shame.

When she came back and took the needles out, I sat up and… my neck felt loose. Like the tin man finally got oiled. No joke, I could turn my head without cracking. I didn’t even realize how locked up I’d been until I wasn’t.

But wait, it gets weirder.

Step 2: Reiki (aka the part I thought was total B.S.)

The same practitioner also offered Reiki, and since I was already horizontal and emotionally tender, I was like, “Sure. Why not. Fix my aura or whatever.”

You just lie there fully clothed while they move their hands near (or sometimes gently on) certain spots of your body to balance your energy. They don’t do anything visibly. No oils, no tools, no chanting. I was waiting to feel silly or bored. Instead? I started crying.

I. started. crying.

Not sobbing. Not emotional. Just tears sliding down my face like my body was like, “We’re gonna go ahead and release this, thanks.” And the weirdest part? I wasn’t even sad. It just… needed to come out.

I also felt this intense warmth in my chest, almost like a weighted heating pad was inside me. After the session, she was like, “You hold a lot in your heart space,” and I was like, “You don’t even know me, ma’am.” But… she kinda did.

After that, I walked out feeling like I’d had an emotional chiropractic adjustment. My headache was gone. My neck didn’t feel like it was full of Legos. I wasn’t anxious for once. I even went home and took the best nap of my life and woke up smiling like a cartoon woodland creature. Like, who am I?

So… Was It a Fluke?

Honestly? No. I’ve gone back since, and every single time, I feel better. Sometimes physically, sometimes emotionally, sometimes just calmer. I didn’t even believe in energy healing when I started. But my body clearly did.

Would I have tried Reiki on its own? No. Would I have ever believed it would help more than ibuprofen? Definitely not. But here we are. Energy medicine: 1, Kacie’s skepticism: 0.
